CYP volunteers founded the Uptown Community Youth Program in 1998 to bring CYP’s comprehensive program approach to this economically and culturally diverse north side neighborhood.
Operating out of donated space at Loyola University and Truman College, UCYP provides our youth with tutoring, mentoring, recreation, college and career prep/planning, scholarships, and free high-quality health care from volunteer physicians at CYP’s Children’s memorial Clinic.
Read to me (3-6 year olds) – Read to Me pairs children with an adult volunteer to provide one-on-one assistance with phonics skills and reading comprehension.
SCORE Tutoring I, II, and III (1st-6th grade) & Teen Tutoring (7th – 9th grade) – SCORE tutoring programs provide one-on-one assistance to youth, focusing on establishing healthy, trustworthy relationships between tutors and tutees. These programs utilize “Concept Packages”, a tool developed by CYP in collaboration with Chicago Public School teachers, which empower tutors to identify and teach critical, grade-specific concepts which their student is struggling with.
Uptown youth who regularly attend our educational programs enjoy a wide array of positive recreational activities. Programs include: basketball, golf, camps, bowling, skating, movies, museum trips, among many others!
